The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 90th Academy Awards®
The films are listed below in alphabetical order.

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will now be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Saturday, January 6, 2018. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar® consideration. Nominations for the 90th Oscars® will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. The 90th Oscars® will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 6:30 p.m. ET/ 3:30 p.m. PT. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected 10 films to move forward
in the visual effects category for the 90th Academy Awards
AMPAS made the announcement on Monday. The list in dominated by big-budget tentpole films such as “Blade Runner 2049”, “Dunkirk”, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2”, “Star Wars: The Last jedi” and “War for the Planet of the Apes” but also includes South Korean action-fantasy “Okja” and Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War tale “The Shape of Water”, which carries a budget of under $20 million.

Last year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” nabbed an Academy Awards nomination for the team of John Knoll, Mohen Leo, Hal Hickel and Neil Corbould. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” also receive an Oscar nomination. The original 1977 “Star Wars” won the VFX Oscar for John Stears, John Dykstra, Richard Edlund, Grant McCune, and Robert Blalack, as did 1980’s “The Empire Strikes Back” and 1983’s “Return of the Jedi.” “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” and “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones” also received VFX Oscar nods. The original 1982 “Blade Runner” was nominated for a visual effects Oscar for Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich and David Dryer but lost to “E.T. The Extraterrestrial.” The Academy had announced 20 films that were under consideration on Dec. 4. That list included “Beauty and the Beast,” “Ghost in the Shell,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” “Justice League,” “Life” “Logan” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Spider-Man Homecoming,” “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Wonder Woman.” “The Jungle Book” won the category this year over “Deepwater Horizon,” “Doctor Strange,” “Kubo and the Two Strings” and “Rogue One: a Star Wars Story.” “Ex Machina,” “Interstellar,” “Gravity” and “Life of Pi” are the four previous winners.

‘옥자’, 美 아카데미 시각효과상 후보리스트 올랐다
봉준호 감독의 ‘옥자’가 제90회 아카데미 시상식 시각효과 부문 후보 10편에 포함됐다.
19일(한국시간) 미국 연예매체 버라이어티에 따르면 아카데미영화상 심사위원회는 시각효과 부문에 오른 예비 후보 10편을 공개했다. 10편의 작품 중 5편이 트로피를 놓고 각축을 벌인다. 5편의 최종 후보는 내년 1월 23일 발표된다.
‘옥자’ 외에 오른 작품은 ‘스타워즈: 라스트 제다이’, ‘가디언즈 오브 갤럭시2’, ‘블레이드러너 2049’, ‘혹성탈출3 종의 전쟁’, ‘콩: 스컬 아일랜드’, ‘에이리언 커버넌트’, ‘발레리안 천개의 문’, ‘셰이프 오브 워터’, ‘덩케르크’ 등이다.
‘옥자’는 가족처럼 자란 슈퍼돼지 옥자를 구하려 혈혈단신 미국으로 건너간 강원도 산골소녀 미자의 모험담을 그린 작품이다. 봉준호 감독이 넷플릭스의 전액 투자를 받아 연출해 제70회 칸 국제영화제 경쟁부문에 초청되기도 했다. ‘옥자’가 최종 후보에 이름을 올릴 수 있을지 이목이 쏠린다.
제90회 아카데미 시상식은 내년 3월 4일 열린다.
